Republic, Missouri, a town of around 15,000 residents, is located about 10 miles west of Springfield along I-44 in the southwest part of the state. The town has experienced rapid growth in the last decade, with its population increasing 74 percent between 2000 and 2010. Established in the mid-19th century, Republic was first a farming town. Later, the city grew into a milling and lumbering center. Today, Republic combines the quiet, laid-back atmosphere of a small town with the big city health care, shopping and entertainment available just down the road in Springfield.
Shopping and Dining
For a town its size, Republic has a surprisingly large number of stores. Among them are big-box retailers like Walmart and Dollar General and smaller, independently-owned shops, such as Cooper's Antiques, Worn but Not Forgotten and Fenton's Collectibles. In addition to the stores in Republic, there are many shopping centers just 10 miles away in Springfield. These include the 150-store Battlefield Mall and the historic shopping district on Commercial Street in downtown Springfield.
Owners of Republic real estate have plenty of restaurants from which to choose, most of which are located along US 60. Local favorites include Rocco's Pizza for Italian food, El Charro for Mexican food, Boxcar BBQ and Windfall's for a hearty and inexpensive breakfast. If you can't find what you're looking for in Republic, there are more than 800 eateries in nearby Springfield, offering everything from fine dining to casual burgers.
Parks and Recreation
Owning Republic real estate means having a great array of outdoor recreational opportunities just minutes away. The Ozark Mountains that surround the town of Republic offer myriad outdoor activities, including hiking and biking, rock climbing and some of the best trout fishing in the United States.
The city of Republic park system operates a small, but diverse collection of parks totaling 140 acres. Facilities include an aquatic center, several playgrounds, ball fields, an outdoor swimming pool and picnic facilities.
Just 25 miles away from Republic is Branson, the country music mecca. The city makes a great day trip or weekend getaway and attracts some of the top names in all genres of music to its scores of concert venues.
Republic real estate consists mostly of single-family homes. The city had more than 4,800 such homes in 2010, according to the city Web site, and that number is expected to double in the next ten years. Because of this rapid growth, many Republic properties are located in new developments. Although you'll find the occasional $500,000+ property, the average listing price in Republic during May, 2012 was $131,000.
The quality of life in Republic is a great source of pride for the city. More than 90 percent of the citizens who responded to a 2010 city survey rate the quality of life as very good.
Schools, Health, Transportation
Children of Republic real estate owners attend the schools of the Republic R-III School District. The district has seven schools, including an early childhood development school, four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. For post-secondary education, there are several colleges and universities located in nearby Springfield, including Missouri State University, Drury University, Baptist Bible College and Ozark Technical Community College.
There is one urgent care facility directly in Republic plus an array of doctors, dentists and veterinarians. For more in-depth care, there are six full-service hospitals located in nearby Springfield with more than 2,200 beds. Two of these hospitals – CoxHealth and Mercy Health Care System – are ranked among the 100 best hospitals in the United States.
Getting around Republic is easy. The city sits directly US 60, which connects the city to Springfield. For longer trips, Springfield-Branson National Airport is just ten miles away. The 2,750-acre facility boasts a new terminal and offers 33 daily non-stop flights to a dozen US cities, including Denver, Chicago, Las Vegas and Atlanta.
