The town has experienced rapid growth in the last decade, with its population increasing 74 percent between 2000 and 2010. Established in the mid-19th century, Republic was first a farming town. Later, the city grew into a milling and lumbering center. Today, Republic combines the quiet, laid-back atmosphere of a small town with the big city health care, shopping and entertainment available just down the road in Springfield.

Shopping and Dining

For a town its size, Republic has a surprisingly large number of stores. Among them are big-box retailers like Walmart and Dollar General and smaller, independently-owned shops, such as Cooper's Antiques, Worn but Not Forgotten and Fenton's Collectibles. In addition to the stores in Republic, there are many shopping centers just 10 miles away in Springfield. These include the 150-store Battlefield Mall and the historic shopping district on Commercial Street in downtown Springfield.
