Springfield and surrounding communities is in the middle of Missouri’s lake country, with plenty of opportunities for hunting and fishing. More than 75 percent of the state’s waterways, including nine lakes, are within a 90-minute drive. Area rivers and lakes provide outstanding fishing for such species as crappie, channel and flathead catfish, bluegill, black bass, rock bass, walleye, and brown and rainbow trout. Floatable waterways include the James River, Current River, Niangua River and Jack’s Fork. Hunting and fishing licenses are available at the Springfield Nature Conservation Center, Bass Pro Shops, Wal-Mart and Kmart. Professional fishing tournaments are often held at Table Rock and other area lakes, with the nation’s best anglers competing for cash and prizes. Deer hunting permits are needed for the fall season (archery in October and firearms in November). Wild turkey hunting has spring and fall seasons for archery and firearms. The Missouri Department of Conservation manages the state’s wildlife, fishery and forestry.
